How to Compare Medicare Advantage Plans in San Antonio for 2027
Oct 08, 2026How to Compare Medicare Advantage Plans in San Antonio for 2027
Searching for a Medicare Advantage plan in San Antonio can quickly become overwhelming.
You may see advertisements highlighting $0 premiums, dental benefits, vision coverage, grocery allowances, transportation, over-the-counter benefits and other features.
Those benefits may matter—but they shouldn't be the beginning of your Medicare decision.
At Medicare Pro, we recommend evaluating Medicare Advantage coverage from the inside out.
Start with your healthcare, then consider the extras.
Here are seven things San Antonio Medicare beneficiaries should review when comparing Medicare Advantage plans for 2027.
1. Start With Your Doctors
One of the first questions should be:
Can I continue seeing the doctors I trust?
Make a list of the providers that matter most to you:
-
Primary care physician
-
Specialists
-
Preferred hospital
-
Medical group
-
Outpatient facilities
-
Therapy providers
-
Other frequently used healthcare providers
Medicare Advantage plans may have provider networks. Depending on the plan, receiving non-emergency care outside that network may not be covered or may cost more.
Never assume that because a doctor's office accepts one Medicare Advantage plan from an insurance company, it accepts every Medicare Advantage plan that company offers.
Verify the specific plan.
2. Review Every Prescription
Next, look at your medications.
Two Medicare Advantage plans can have similar medical benefits but produce very different prescription costs.
For each medication, review:
-
Whether the drug is on the formulary
-
Drug tier
-
Copayment or coinsurance
-
Deductible
-
Prior authorization
-
Step therapy
-
Quantity limits
-
Preferred pharmacy pricing
For 2027, the defined standard Medicare Part D deductible is capped at $700, although individual plans may have lower deductibles or different structures. The annual out-of-pocket threshold for covered Part D drugs is $2,400 in 2027.
Your medication list can significantly affect which coverage option makes the most financial sense.
3. Look Beyond the Monthly Premium
A $0 monthly plan premium does not mean your healthcare costs will always be $0.
When comparing Medicare Advantage plans, examine the entire cost structure.
That may include:
-
Primary care copays
-
Specialist copays
-
Hospital costs
-
Outpatient surgery
-
Diagnostic testing
-
Imaging
-
Emergency room costs
-
Skilled nursing
-
Therapy
-
Prescription costs
-
Maximum out-of-pocket amount
A person who rarely sees a doctor may evaluate these costs differently from someone receiving regular specialist care.
Your healthcare usage matters.
4. Understand the Maximum Out-of-Pocket Amount
Medicare Advantage plans have a yearly limit on what members pay for covered Part A and Part B services.
This is commonly called the maximum out-of-pocket, or MOOP.
Think of it as part of your financial risk when evaluating a plan.
Someone shouldn't necessarily select a plan simply because its routine doctor copays look attractive. Consider what the plan could cost during a difficult health year, too.
Insurance is not only about what happens when you're healthy.
It is also about protecting yourself when life doesn't go according to plan.
5. Then Look at Dental, Vision, Hearing and Other Benefits
Once doctors, prescriptions and core medical costs have been reviewed, additional benefits can help distinguish between plans that otherwise fit your needs.
Depending on the plan and eligibility, additional benefits may include things such as:
-
Dental coverage
-
Vision benefits
-
Hearing benefits
-
Fitness programs
-
Transportation
-
Over-the-counter allowances
-
Meal benefits
-
Other supplemental benefits
Availability and benefit amounts vary by plan, service area and eligibility.
The important question isn't simply:
“Which plan gives me the most?”
It is:
“Which plan gives me benefits I can actually use without sacrificing the healthcare coverage that matters most?”
That's a much better Medicare question.
6. Understand the Type of Network
Not every Medicare Advantage plan operates the same way.
For example, you may encounter HMO and PPO plans.
An HMO commonly has more structured network requirements, while a PPO may allow certain out-of-network services at different costs. Exact rules vary by plan.
When reviewing coverage, ask:
-
Do I need referrals?
-
Can I receive care outside the network?
-
What happens while traveling?
-
Is my medical group participating?
-
Are my hospitals participating?
-
What happens if one of my doctors leaves the network?
Do not assume the letters “HMO” or “PPO” tell you everything you need to know. Read the individual plan's rules.
7. Don't Compare Your Medicare Plan to Your Neighbor's
We hear versions of this frequently:
“My neighbor loves her plan.”
“My brother gets more dental.”
“My friend has a grocery benefit.”
That information can be useful—but it doesn't tell you whether that same coverage fits you.
Your friend may:
-
Take different medications.
-
See different doctors.
-
Live in a different county.
-
Qualify for different programs.
-
Have different chronic conditions.
-
Have Medicaid or Extra Help.
-
Use healthcare differently than you do.
Medicare coverage is personal.
The plan your neighbor loves could be a poor fit for your circumstances, and vice versa.
A Simple Medicare Pro Checklist
Before enrolling in a Medicare Advantage plan for 2027, we recommend asking these questions:
Doctors: Are my important providers participating?
Hospitals: Are my preferred facilities covered appropriately?
Prescriptions: Are my medications covered, and what will they cost?
Pharmacy: Is my preferred pharmacy participating at favorable cost sharing?
Medical Costs: What do I pay when I use the plan?
Worst-Case Costs: What is the maximum out-of-pocket amount?
Additional Benefits: Which benefits will I realistically use?
Rules: Do I understand referrals, prior authorization and network requirements?
If you can't confidently answer those questions, keep researching before making your decision.
Medicare Open Enrollment for 2027
Medicare Open Enrollment runs from October 15 through December 7, 2026.
Eligible Medicare beneficiaries can use this period to review and make certain changes to Medicare Advantage and prescription drug coverage for 2027. Changes generally take effect January 1.
But Open Enrollment is not a requirement to change.
Sometimes the right decision is selecting new coverage.
Sometimes the right decision is keeping what you already have.
The goal should be finding coverage that appropriately fits you.
