If you’ve ever felt confused by the terms Medicare and Medicaid, you’re not alone. These two programs sound similar, but they are quite different in how they work, who they’re designed for, and how you qualify. Understanding the difference is essential when making smart, faith-filled decisions about your healthcare coverage.

“Medicare is not Medicaid. It's important for you to understand that so that you can make a proper plan decision.”

✅ What Is Medicare?

Medicare is a federal health insurance program primarily for:

  • People 65 years or older
  • Individuals with a qualifying disability through the Social Security Administration
“Medicare is a federal-based program that is offered to seniors that are 65 and older, or to people who qualify for Medicare based on their disability.”

You can think of Medicare as:

“Care for seniors and care for those who have disabilities.”

Key Points:

  • Run by the federal government
  • Covers hospital care, doctor visits, prescriptions, and more
  • Offers different options (Parts A, B, C, D) to help meet unique needs

✅ What Is Medicaid?

Medicaid is a state-run program that offers healthcare coverage for low-income individuals and families.

“Medicaid, I like to say, is aid for people that need help because of their income.”

Key Facts:

  • Administered by individual state governments
  • Income-based eligibility (each state has its own rules)
  • Can help pay for:
    • Insurance premiums
    • Deductibles
    • Co-pays
    • Additional healthcare costs
“You have to qualify through your state based on income requirements.”

“Medicaid is based on income, and Medicare is based on age or disability. These are different programs.”

🤝 Can You Have Both Medicare and Medicaid?

Yes! This is known as dual eligibility. Many individuals qualify for both programs and receive expanded coverage and cost savings.

“You can be 65 or older and considered low income... you can get Medicare through the federal government, and you can get Medicaid because of your income.”
